Some labs monitor models' chain-of-thought for signs of deceptive reasoning, and there are published examples of it catching bad behavior. But a sufficiently capable model could learn to hide its reasoning. Is CoT monitoring a durable safety technique or a temporary advantage that disappears as models get smarter?
